Jury selection is complete in the triple homicide case for Derek Saretzky

LETHBRIDGE – Jury selection was completed Thursday morning at the Lethbridge court house in the trial for Derek Saretzky.

The 24-year-old faces three counts of first degree murder and one count of committing an indignity to a human body for the deaths of 27-year old Terry Blanchette, his two-year old daughter Hailey, and 69-year old Hanne Meketech.

The process involved selecting 16 individuals, with two being dismissed as soon as the trial begins. The remaining 14 will then sit through the trial, with 12 being tasked with making the final decision.

The jurors chosen include nine men and seven women. Two of the men, who were chosen as alternates, will be dismissed once the trial begins.

Saretzky was arrested and charged in September of 2015, shortly after the bodies of the father and daughter were found in the Crowsnest Pass.

Then in April of 2016, the murder charge involving Meketech – who was killed one week before the other two – was added.

The trial is scheduled to begin June 7th, and is estimated to run for four weeks.
