Walk a Mile in Her Shoes returns for sixth year

Jun 7, 2017 | 11:52 AM

The annual international men’s march to stop rape, sexual assault and gender violence is happening in Red Deer for the sixth year.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is hosted by Women’s Outreach and gives men a chance to walk a mile along Taylor Drive in high heel shoes.

Funds raised go towards 20 different programs run by Women’s Outreach, all of which revolve around the three tiers of domestic violence, homelessness and poverty. Fund Development Officer Darcy Ouellet says their programming is more work-intensive than most people realize.

“We’re definitely getting our mesage out about what we do. The day of the event, if anybody wants to tour the agency and see in more detail what we actually do, if people are going to support us, then let me show you why we want you to support us,” he says. “People are really surprised to the extent of all the different programs we do.”

Ouellet adds the event is different from anything else they do.

“It brings such a community awareness to what we do, and the humour factor, seeing these guys attempt to walk in high heel shoes for a mile. If you want to make a pledge, great,” he says.

The walk is happening Thursday, June 8 at the Women’s Outreach Centre. Registration is from 11 to 12, with the walk beginning at noon sharp. Cash or cheque donations will be accepted. Shoes will be supplied.
