Red Deer Games Foundation hands out latest round of athlete grants

The Red Deer Games Foundation has announced the recipients of its annual Athlete Development Grant for spring 2017.

Grants are awards to athletes living in Red Deer who display a high level of ability and strong commitment.

Athletes excelled at either international, national, provincial or regional level competitions and funds are provided to help offset the costs of training and equipment as they strive for greater heights.

This year’s winners are:

Darius Ramrattan (Innisfail) – Slalom Kayak – A two-time participant at Junior World Championships, the 19-year-old will attend his third World Kayak Championships (his second U23 World Championship) this summer in Bratislava, Slovakia,  and compete in his first ever World Cup event, in Markleeburg, Germany.

Drew Persson (Eckville) – Wrestling – A two-time ASAA Provincial Wrestling Champion, a silver medalist at Greco Roman Nationals, 16-year-old Persson will attend the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg this summer and has the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as her ultimate goal.

Molly Simpson (Red Deer) – BMX – A four-time Provincial Champion, and a National Champion, the 14-year-old will race in the 2017 BMX Canada Cup this summer and will also represent Canada at the BMX World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina later this year.

Stephanie Spicer (Red Deer) – Speed Skating – This 17-year-old captured gold in the 500m and 1000m races at the National Age Class Speed Skating Championships this past season and will attend the University of Calgary this fall where she will train and compete with the Alberta High Performance Speed Skating Team.

Kyle Ringdahl (Delburne) – Fastball – A two-time Provincial Champion n baseball, Ringdahl, 20, has also won four Provincial Fastball Championships and will represent Alberta in U21 Men’s Fastball at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg this summer.
