Celebrating Seniors’ Month at Red Deer’s annual Mayor’s Garden Party

Jun 28, 2017 | 3:20 PM

With inclement weather conditions outside, the annual Mayor’s Garden Party pressed on inside the Collicutt Centre on Wednesday.

Honoured senior citizen Mary Fink spoke briefly about Mayor Tara Veer and her passion for the city.

“Thank you Mayor Veer and continued success to you in all your future endeavours,” said Fink.

Veer thanked Fink for being “an incredible Red Deerian” and said they first met when they were on the Heritage Preservation Committee together.

“She’s a wealth of knowledge and information and as a born and raised Red Deerian I am so proud to know Mary and be able to learn about our community before many of us were here,” said Veer.

The Garden Party came about as a way to honour senior citizens in Red Deer during the month of June, Senior Citizens’ month.

“This is our opportunity as a community to thank our senior citizens for all that you have built and all that you continue to build for Red Deerians and so we want to honour you and thank you. You are the pride of our community,” said Veer.

Among the crowd were 3-month-old Penelope Smith and her mom Kathleen Smith. Kathleen said she thought she would come and take a look and ended up sitting with some lovely women, including Mae Spring who sat with baby Penelope while taking in the afternoon.

Some other noticeable guests included the Sylvan Sassy Sister’s Red Hat Group and their “queen” Ethel English. English said they love to come out and see the costumes and loves that their group fits in in their attire.

“It’s nice to hear the entertainment and hear the Mayor’s words and meet lots of people too. I often find people I know, and while we had lunch today we found a new member,” said English.
