Changes needed to improve Alberta’s deadliest highway sections: Wildrose

Jun 28, 2017 | 5:01 PM

Alberta’s Official Opposition is demanding that the NDP Government take action to improve safety at the most dangerous intersections throughout the province.

The Wildrose party has released an interactive map showing collision statistics for the eight deadliest highway sections in Alberta over a ten year period.

One of the locations is near Sylvan Lake on Highway 11 at the intersection with Range Road 15 (60 Street), where 16 fatal collisions occurred from 2005 – 2014, tied for the 4th-most dangerous highway section in Alberta

For families, it’s important to know where high risk sections of highway exist and pressure the government to take the needed action,” said Garth Hunter,  Wildrose Shadow Transportation & Technology Minister.

The information featured on the map was gathered from a freedom of information request. Hunter also called on the government to be accountable and make the information released Wednesday more accessible.

“This is not very transparent of the department when as opposition, all we are trying to do is help identify the troubled spots on our highways so we can prioritize limited funding for safety improvements,” Hunter said, noting the government blocked detailing the exact locations of the accidents.

In 2014, 369 people died, 18,745 people were injured, and there were 144,740 total collisions on Alberta’s highways.
