Gord Bamford Golf Classic celebrates 10 years of giving

Aug 8, 2017 | 11:00 PM

The Gord Bamford Charity Golf Classic is celebrating its tenth anniversary.

Through the event, Bamford’s foundation has raised more than $2.7 million for youth charities and is poised to break the $3 million mark with its latest gala and golf tournament.

“It all began in 2008 with a small golf tournament in Lacombe, Alberta to try and raise a few bucks for charity,” Bamford says. “I have proudly watched it grow into the exciting event it is today, and [am] even prouder to see the donations actually out there making a true difference for both kids and communities.”

Festivities get started Wednesday with a dinner event at the Sheraton hotel in Red Deer before golfers hit the links alongside a number of celebrities Thursday at the Lacombe Golf and Country Club.

Those scheduled to be in attendance include NHL alumni Marty McSorley, Mark Recchi, Theo Fleury, Curtis Glencross, Jamie Macoun, Rob Brown and five of the Sutter brothers. Pro rodeo cowboys Denny Hay and Davey Shields Jr., as well as former pro golfer Brett Bingham and Olympic curler Brad Gushue will also be there in support, in addition to a number of singers and songwriters including Bamford himself and Dallas Smith.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be the recipient of many awards throughout my career,” says Bamford, who is from Lacombe. “But the reward of being part of giving back is something that is very close to my heart.”
