Red Deer carries the flame as next Canada Games host

Now, it’s our moment.

As the 2017 Canada Summer Games came to a close Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg, Mayor Tara Veer accepted the official Canada Games flag on behalf of Red Deer, host city for the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Red Deer volleyball star Reece Lehman then accepted the games torch, lit with the flame that will ignite the 2019 games when get underway 551 days from now.

Sunday’s closing ceremony from Winnipeg’s Investor Group Field was broadcast live across Canada on TSN2, and featured a promotional video inviting the country to our city in 18 months’ time.

More than 20,000 visitors are expected in Red Deer when the 2019 Canada Winter Games takes place from February 15 – March 3.

Estimates predict an economic impact of $132 million.

Construction is underway on several key venues for the 2019 games, including the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, the Servus Arena, and Great Chief Park enhancement.

Alberta finished fourth in the medal standings at the Winnipeg games with 97 — 26 gold, 38 silver, 33 bronze.

In the final event, Team Alberta including Tyla and Jade Lee of Red Deer earned silver in female softball. The team was coached by Teri Hunter of Red Deer. 

Lehman and the rest of Team Alberta mates brought home silver in male volleyball on Saturday. 

On Thursday, para-swimmer Hidde Geurts of Red Deer County won silver in 50m (S1-3) / 100m (S4-14) Breastsroke.
