First Rider program gives kids and parents important bus safety lesson

Aug 15, 2017 | 3:18 PM

Kids and their parents took part in the eighth annual First Rider bus safety event on Tuesday.

Targeting students in Kindergarten and Grade 1, along with any other students who will be riding a school bus for the first time, the program involves four activity stations where participants become familiar and comfortable with protocols, procedures and expectations that will make their busing experience successful.

Participants started by watching a bus safety video featuring Winnie-the-Pooh. They also learned about the differences between rural and city bus stop rules, the “danger zones” around the bus where incidents are most likely to occur, as well as evacuation procedures.
