Lockdown at Hunting Hills High School following social media threat, one in custody

Mar 2, 2018 | 10:07 AM

A threat made via social media led to a lockdown Friday morning at Hunting Hills High School.

Red Deer RCMP say the school was placed in lockdown as a precautionary safety measure. They note no weapons were involved in this incident and that there was no immediate risk to students, staff or the public.

The investigation began after someone reported seeing a threat toward the school on social media. That post has since been removed and Red Deer RCMP have one youth in custody.

The lockdown has since ended. Students who were locked out of the school during the incident were taken to the Collicutt Centre next door.

Nearby Notre Dame Catholic High School was placed in a hold and secure while the events unfolded but has since resumed normal operations.

A parent of a Grade 11 student at Hunting Hills says she’s extremely concerned that incidents like this continue to take place so close to home.

“I’m getting mad,” she told rdnewsNOW. “It’s scary to think that you can drop your kid off thinking that they are going to be safe and then this is happening, it seems like, more times than it should – one too many.

“I’m annoyed to think that this is going on more times than one.”

RCMP say their investigation is in its early stages and that they plan to issue an update on Monday once more information becomes available.

“RCMP thank the students and staff at Hunting Hills High School for their immediate engagement with police when they became aware of the threat,” Cpl. Karen Kay says in a release. “Public safety is the top priority for Red Deer RCMP, and threats such as this one will be investigated thoroughly.”
