Temporary traffic pattern change as QE II – Gaetz Avenue Interchange construction continues

Mar 22, 2018 | 9:09 AM

RED DEER- Alberta Transportation has updated the work that lies ahead for the new QE II – Gaetz Avenue interchange improvement project.

A temporary traffic pattern change will be in effect along the QE II, between Taylor Drive and south of Gaetz Avenue. Officials say the detour will be in effect starting Tuesday, March 27 and will likely be in effect until mid-April, weather permitting.

Northbound highway traffic will be detoured onto the southbound lanes of the highway where both northbound and southbound traffic will operate.

This temporary pattern change is required to erect girders for the Gaetz Avenue bridge, and is anticipated to be in effect until early April, weather permitting.

Two lanes will be accommodated in each direction and traffic will be separated by barriers.

Reduced speed limits will remain in effect throughout the construction zone.

The speed limit has been reduced to 80 km/hr as work is ongoing through the day and night.

Motorists are asked to drive safely and obey the speed limits through the construction zone.

Looking further into the year, officials say the following work is planned for 2018:

– Girder installation for the Gaetz Avenue bridge over the winter, and completion and opening of the bridge in late 2018
– Construction of the new southbound QE II bridge over Taylor Drive
– Completion and opening of the northbound and southbound collector-distributor bridges over Taylor Drive
– Demolition of the old northbound QE II bridge over Taylor Drive
– Opening of the permanent alignment for Gaetz Avenue northbound
– Completion of remaining two MSE walls
– Opening of the roundabout at Leva Avenue
– Closure of Gasoline Alley West frontage road (to coincide with the opening of the southbound collector-distributor road)
– Construction of overhead sign structures and guide signs
