Caution needed around waterways as weather heats up

Apr 20, 2018 | 3:13 PM

The City of Red Deer is warning residents to exercise caution near the river and area creeks, ponds and reservoirs.

Emergency Management Coordinator Karen Mann says warm weather has arrived and with that comes people excited to enjoy the outdoors.

“At this time of the year, remaining ice is unstable and melting snow results in fast-flowing creeks and changing levels on the river,” she says.

As well, parents are encouraged to speak with their children about water and ice safety.

Pet owners should also ensure animals are under control while near water or ice. Throwing sticks or balls onto the ice is a no-no and pets should be kept on a leash.

“Enjoy the sunshine but be cautious. If pets fall through the ice, it is not only hazardous for the animal, it also puts emergency services personnel at unnecessary risk if they have to respond,” says Ken McMullen, Chief of Emergency Services.

If you witness a person or animal in trouble, stay on the bank and call 9-1-1 immediately.

Meanwhile, the Town of Ponoka has also issued a reminder for residents to be cautious along the Battle River.

Other spring safety tips include watching for standing water on paths and trails, exercising caution while engaging in recreation activities like boating or fishing, as well as respecting all trail closures, barricades and safety signage in parks.
