“Free Our Finest” in support of Special Olympics

Aug 18, 2017 | 11:24 AM

Several of our city’s law enforcement officers are camped out on top of Walmart at Parkland Mall in support of a great cause.

The annual “Free Our Finest” event, an initiative of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, is raising funds for Special Olympics.

Free Our Finest reverses roles where the public must free officers from the rooftop by making donations.

esidents are invited to stop by to make donations and enjoy activities including face painting, old west-style prison photo booth, and an up close look at various pieces of law enforcement equipment.

Last year province-wide, more than $467,000 was raised for Special Olympics through the event.

This weekend’s event in Red Deer is on until 4 p.m. Saturday.

Law Enforcement Torch Run is Special Olympics’ largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle internationally. In Alberta, 18 agencies in 117 communities contribute to LETR efforts annually, not only with events, but as Guardians of the Flame ensuring the delivery of the Special Flame of Hope to the opening ceremony of Provincial Games and sending off our local athletes to National and World Games.
