Commercial construction boosts 2018 Red Deer building permit values

Significant commercial construction in 2018 lead to an increase in the value of building permits in Red Deer last year, despite fewer permits being issued compared to 2017.

According to the latest stats, there was $11.4 million in building permits issued in December, up from $4.7 million in December of 2017, while total permit values for 2018 were $233.8 million, eclipsing the 2017 total of $152.8 million.

City officials also point-out 1,068 permits were issued last year, compared to 1,205 permits issued in 2017.

Commercial building permits specifically were said to make a stronger showing in 2018 according to City officials, noting 231 permits issued for a value of $115 million, compared to 213 permits valued at $65 million the year before.

Significant projects identified last year include the expansions at Bower Place and Westerner Park, as well as the building of a new Westpark Middle School, and modernization of St. Patrick’s Community School.
