Rebels bury Wheat Kings on the road in Brandon

Jan 12, 2019 | 7:30 AM

The Red Deer Rebels picked up a big road win Friday night in Brandon, Manitoba, knocking off the Wheat Kings 5-3.

Cameron Hausinger continued his hot streak by getting the Rebels on the board first, a powerplay goal to boot. His 13th of the season, from Oleg Zaytsev and Chris Douglas, came just past the eight minute mark.

Just 1:17 later, Brandon’s Ben McCartney would equalize with his 12th of the year. It was 1-1 after 20 minutes.

In the second, the Rebels took charge of the matchup.

At 7:52, Alex Morozoff netted his 7th, from Brett Davis and Zak Smith.

Douglas scored for Red Deer again just 1:03 later, his 11th, and it was all of a sudden 3-1 midway through the game.

Before the period was out, Davis would score his 13th of the year, and 6th in 13 games with Red Deer. Brandon Hagel and the recently returned Alexander Alexeyev got the assists on the powerplay marker.

However, 15 seconds later, Brandon’s Stelio Mattheos would give his team life headed into the third by cutting Red Deer’s lead to 4-2. The goal was Mattheos’s 27th of the season.

In the final frame of regulation, Cameron Hausinger potted an insurance marker 1:01 in, his 14th (2nd of the night), with Dawson Barteaux and Davis earning the assists.

The final tally came at 8:34 as Mattheos would get his 2nd goal of the night and 28th of the season, but it was too little, too late for the Wheat Kings.

Cameron Hausinger (2G) was named third star of the game, Stelio Mattheos (2G, 1A) was named second star, and Brett Davis (1G, 2A) earned first star honours.

Returning to the net after two games off was Rebels’ goaltender Ethan Anders, who made 22 saves on 25 shots faced for his 21st win of the season.

With the win, Red Deer now has 51 points, one back of Central Division-leading Lethbridge and tied with Edmonton. Medicine Hat has 49, Calgary has 46, and Kootenay has 23.

Up next for the Rebels is the third of a four game swing through the east on Saturday night in Regina. Red Deer is 2-0 so far on the trip after defeating Swift Current 3-2 on Jan. 9.

Their game against the Pats can be heard LIVE on 106.7 The Drive starting at 5:50. Puck drop is at 6 p.m. They wrap up the road trip on Jan. 18 in Lethbridge.
