RDC Athletics Recap: Mar. 14 – 16

RED DEER- This past week the Red Deer College Kings hockey team dropped a very close semi-final against the MacEwan University Griffins.

All three games went to overtime.

The RDC Queens Indoor Track team earned silver and the Kings captured bronze at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championships in Calgary.

RDC runners won several individual medals.

Kings Hockey, Thursday, March 14, MacEwan University

The RDC Kings were shaded 4-3 by the MacEwan University Griffins in double-overtime.

Chase Thudium, Tanner Butler and Dylan Thudium scored for the Kings.

Kings Hockey, Friday, March 15, Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings defeated the Griffins 1-0 in overtime, evening the best of three series 1-1.

Sylvan Lake’s Dylan Thudium struck on the power play in the extra period.

Troy Trombley stopped all 33 shots for the shutout.

Kings Hockey, Saturday, March 16, MacEwan University

In Edmonton, the Griffins took a 3-2 decision over the Kings in double-overtime, advancing to the final. Dylan Thudium and Tanner Butler scored for RDC.

RDC Indoor Track, March 15-16, ACAC Championships, Repsol Sport Centre

After two days of competition, and overall team points, the RDC Queens earned silver and the Kings won bronze.

Shayla Sklaruk had an excellent championships, winning gold over 300 m (42.33), 600 m (1:38.81) and as a member of the 4 x 400 m relay.

Lauren Pasiuk, Jill Stewart and Sandra Garcia-Bernal joined Sklaruk on the first place relay squad.

In the 1,000 m, Sandra Garcia-Bernal finished in the silver medal position (3:12.71) and captured bronze over 1,500 m (5:12.38).

Jill Stewart raced to ACAC bronze (11:08.11) over 3,000 m.

Matt Hope earned bronze in the 1,000 m (2:36.15) and 1,500 metre final (4:08.57).
