Red Deer Minor Football tackling storage facility project

Work is anticipated to start this spring on an accessory building for Red Deer Minor Football (RDMF) at Rosedale community fields.

RDMF Vice President Scott Smith says they are working to obtain their building permit after the City’s Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) approved their development permit last fall.

“We’re looking at construction in May,” says Smith. “This has been something that we’ve been wanting since 2006. We need it for storage, number one because Red Deer Minor Football, we supply all of the equipment for the kids to play.”

In addition to the players’ gear, Smith says the sport requires other equipment for the teams to use during practice as well.

“Bags, ladders, all the balls and everything else that we use like tackling dummies etc, that stays right now in a shed down by Lindsay Thurber High School,” explains Smith. “What we’ll also be using this room for will be some dryland training in the off-season months. We’ll also be using it for meeting rooms for the Board and we also will have film rooms for our kids.”

It’s hoped that the 148 square metre structure will be in place by the end of May.

It will also contain a maximum of three portable toilets within a screened outdoor area and be located just east of the existing community hall facing Reichley Street.

Smith notes registrations are now open for their annual Spring Camp from May 28-30 and for their fall season as well.

“People can register online right now,” exclaims Smith. “We’ve actually reduced the price this year because last year we did a Grey Cup raffle which we have used the proceeds to go towards reducing the cost for families. It’s an exciting time for us.”
