Over 1,700 people turned out to the Westerner Park Centrium on Sunday for the highly anticipated Boston Bruins Alumni Charity Game.

Former Boston Bruins players made the trip up to Red Deer to help raise money for The Mustard Seed and Shalom Counselling Centre.

Raymond Bourque, Rick Middleton and Joe Mullen were among the legends who took on the Red Deer Hope Stars made up of hockey enthusiasts from the community.

The Bruins Alumni won the hockey game 9-7, but the biggest win came off the ice as more than $60,000 was raised for the two charities through the game and post-game banquet.

“We are very thankful that the Bruins Alumni came to the city to help us raise money to help make a difference in the community,” said Scott Tilbury, Development Officer for The Mustard Seed.

“Everyone who came was so kind and caring and they gave up their time freely. That was demonstrated when young pond hockey players from Red Deer went on the ice to scrimmage with the players. These children were left with memories for a lifetime.”

Tilbury added, “Every child that went on the ice near the end of the first period every one of them helped raise money for these two important organizations and we are just so thankful for everyone’s generosity.”

Tilbury says they are thankful for the opportunity to educate and answer questions relating to poverty and homelessness and challenges related to mental health and counselling.

The Mustard Seed is an organization that aims to support people facing poverty and homelessness in Alberta.

The Shalom Counselling Center is a charity-based organization that counsels individuals who are facing mental health concerns and emotional distress.
