RDC Athletics launches text-to-donate fundraising campaign

Mar 21, 2019 | 3:26 PM

A new campaign aims to raise $30,000 in one day in support of Red Deer College athletes.

The ‘30INTHEBANK’ campaign launched Mar. 20, with Mar. 29 being the day where supporters can contribute either $5, $10, $20 or $25 towards athletic scholarships through a text-to-donate line (45678).

“This is the first year of this campaign,” says RDC curling athlete and scholarship recipient Andrew Jones. “We’re excited to give it a try and see how it goes. We have lots of great support from the community here, so we’re excited to bring them on board and get people that normally don’t get involved with RDC Athletics, involved this way.”

The ‘30INTHEBANK’ campaign takes place in advance of this year’s RDC Kings and Queens Athletics Scholarship Breakfast on Apr. 9, featuring two-time Olympic silver medalist curler Cheryl Bernard as the keynote speaker.

RDC cross-country running and indoor track athlete Shaelyn Moltzahn says the event is a big one as it RDC student-athletes to meet their sponsors who support the scholarships they benefit from.

“They make it so that we can do what we do,” she explains. “It means a lot to the students to kind of put a face to a name and know the people in our community that are behind us. It also means a lot to know that we’re appreciated for being student-athletes, every little bit makes a difference for us.”

The Kings and Queens Athletics Scholarship Breakfast takes place at Red Deer’s Pidherney Curling Centre on Apr. 9, with doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the program at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by visiting rdc.ab.ca/tickets.

Since its inception, the event has raised more than $300,000 for student- athlete awards.
