Calkins: Trudeau’s Summer of Failure

Sep 25, 2018 | 10:06 AM

After months and months of failing to deliver on everything from trade to taxes to pipelines, Justin Trudeau had an opportunity this summer to finally get the big issues right. But instead of a fresh start, Justin Trudeau had a disastrous summer and continued to fail on the issues most important to Canadians. This summer, Justin Trudeau failed Canadians on:

Economy – Trudeau’s economic policies have failed to create the growth and opportunity Canada needs to compete with the world. This summer, Canadians learned his failure to compete could cost Canada more than 600,000 jobs. His stubborn refusal to acknowledge Canada’s tax and regulatory disadvantages has seen billions of dollars in investment leave the country – taking jobs and opportunity with it.

Carbon Tax – Justin Trudeau cut a special deal with big polluters to reduce their carbon tax rate while keeping it the same for small businesses and families. Alberta and PEI both pulled out of Trudeau’s national carbon tax. His carbon tax coalition is failing.

Ethics – Yet another Liberal Minister was found guilty of breaking conflict of interest laws when he intervened on the granting of licenses for the clam fishery. Justin Trudeau failed to discipline this Minister.

Pipelines – We begin the fall session still without a plan to get the Trans Mountain pipeline built. After spending $4.5 billion tax dollars to buy it, we learned this summer that Justin Trudeau can’t even build it. He has failed to provide leadership to see this critical project succeed and now he has failed to get a shovel in the ground.

Illegal Border Crossers – Justin Trudeau still has no idea how to fix the mess he has created at the border. This summer, after appointing a Minister in charge of Border Security, the Liberals still failed to come up with a plan to stop people from crossing the border illegally. Canadians also learned this summer that Trudeau’s border mess is causing delays for the entire system.

Trade – The Liberals failed to ratify the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in the spring session, and then ignored a request from Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer to recall Parliament and ratify it in the summer. Meanwhile, on NAFTA, Justin Trudeau found himself out in the cold while Mexico and the United States negotiated a new agreement and we still don’t have a new NAFTA deal.

Trudeau was elected on a platform of strengthening the middle-class, running a clean and ethical government, running small and temporary deficits, improving Canada’s presence on the world stage and he has failed on absolutely all counts.

Our Conservative team is ready to hold Justin Trudeau to account for his Summer of Failure. We are building a strong platform and a winning team that will defeat Justin Trudeau in 2019.
